Winifred Atwell Revisited
Saturday 4th December 2021
Adam Fairhall piano & Johnny Hunter suitcase drums
Stalwarts of Manchester's creative music scene, Adam and Johnny have established a duo to explore early jazz forms through an avant-garde lens. The piano/drums combo is perfectly suited to this, being a favoured format both in Harlem stride and free music.
In this project they revisit the repertoire and idiom of a neglected figure of 1950s British popular music, the Trinidadian pianist Winifred Atwell. Enormously popular in Britain in the post-war period and selling over 20 million records, she is barely a footnote in the histories of jazz and popular music.
As well as forging a ground-breaking career as a female instrumentalist (she was the first black person to have a No. 1 hit in the UK), Winifred combined aspects of the American honky tonk piano craze with the music hall and pub piano traditions of Britain.
She made boogie and ragtime household sounds in the UK. Read more about Winifred Atwell...
Johnny and Adam have established a close musical understanding through a number of projects including their piano trio Fragments (with Seth Bennett) and the organ trio Revival Room (with Mark Hanslip). In duo format their communication, quick thinking and sheer playfulness is fully evident. See for yourself in this glorious video!
Their Winifred Atwell Revisited album will be released on Efpi Records in January 2022.
